The exhibition entitled Pseudo 40 Pauer 70 will open on November 30th at the Art Collection of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Pseudo and the 70th birthday of Gyula Pauer. Gyula Pauer, who has been a member of the Széchenyi Academy of Letters and Arts since 1996, organized his first Pseudo exhibition in October of 1970, at which he also presented the First Pseudo Manifesto, reproduced with the use of stencils. The exhibition, which is organized around the manifesto, will present various aspects of "Pseudo art" by showcasing existing works, sources and documents, all in the "academic" milieu of the Art Collection. The exhibition will close on Pauer's 70th birthday, February 28th, 2011.
The First Pseudo Manifesto is an outstanding work of post-1945 art. It is an expression by a sculptor of his views on the dual nature - determined by the duality of Falsehood and Truth - of sculpture and modern art (and "modern" life). Due to its general message and consequentially inferential style, which could always be interpreted as having a bearing on current affairs, both the Manifesto and Pseudo were banned at the moment of their creation. At the same time, with his Pseudo program Pauer raised the issue of semblance and illusion, not just with respect to the phenomena of art and society, but emphasizing its determining nature in the areas of human cognition, reflection and scholarly research: "In my view the Pseudo-problem is increasingly important in research into reality, [in which] alongside physicists, chemists and cosmonauts artists also have a role .".
On the occasion of the exhibition organized at the Art Collection of the HAS, the Manifesto, which at the moment has been translated into four languages, will be rendered by participants taking part in the action voluntarily into numerous others. The completed translations will be read during the opening. The multilingual publication of the manifesto is scheduled to be prepared for the closing of the exhibition.
The opening of the exhibition has been organized as part of the Festival of Hungarian Science by the Research Institute for Art History of the HAS.
